The JVC XM-D1 is a versatile digital audio recorder that utilizes ATRAC technology for audio compression. It features dual operation modes, allowing it to function both on AC power and with a rechargeable Ni-Cad battery, making it suitable for various environments. The device boasts a large, tiltable EL display measuring approximately 3 to 3.5 inches, which provides a bright and clear interface with a 16-character capacity. A slot-in disc loading mechanism enhances user convenience. The interface includes a 12-button keypad complemented by a jog wheel for Automatic Music Selection (AMS). Users can input titles of up to 32 characters and set timers for play/record operations, complete with manual and automatic microphone level adjustments. The display includes dual left/right dB meters for visual sound monitoring. Accompanying the unit is a compact wireless remote control that features 24 buttons for basic playback, recording, and synchro-record functions, though it lacks advanced features such as record editing or track titling. The recording capabilities include date and time stamping, though it requires a reset after battery changes. The device supports various playback modes including program, random, and a 15-second intro play known as 'Music Scan'. Its exterior is finished in dark gray. When powered by a 6V Ni-Cad battery, the XM-D1 has a playback life of approximately 100 minutes and recording life of about 80 minutes. An optional car battery cord, the JVC AP-V7, is available for mobile usage. While it is designed for portability, some users comment on its size, noting that it may not be as portable as anticipated.
