The Luxman WL-500 is an FM/AM tuner that was released in December 1971. It was developed to complement the SQ500X series and features advanced technology aimed at enhancing sound quality and reception stability. The tuner utilizes a dual-gate MOS-type FET in its high-frequency amplifier and frequency conversion circuits to improve sensitivity and cross-modulation characteristics even in strong signal fields. The inclusion of a 4-row variable capacitor allows for effective selectivity. Its intermediate frequency amplifier circuit employs three integrated circuits (ICs) and a block filter, providing selectivity comparable to crystal filters and helping to reduce distortion. The multiplex circuit is designed with a cross-talk cancellation feature and a low-pass filter to minimize carrier leakage, enhancing stereo separation. The AM section includes a multi-stage amplification process to ensure stability and sound quality while managing distortion in strong signal environments. The WL-500 is equipped with signal strength and center tuning meters, alongside a pure electronic muting circuit to eliminate noise between stations. It features high-blend noise filtering during FM stereo broadcasts and supports multi-path observation via a specially designed signal amplification system for oscilloscopes. The device is adaptable to a power supply of 240 Volts in Europe, and modifications to the power supply capacitors can enhance stability.
