Audiolab has unveiled the highly anticipated successors to its renowned M-DAC, introducing the D7 and D9 models. Both DACs retain the compact chassis that made the M-DAC a favorite among audiophiles, ensuring they fit seamlessly into existing setups. Equipped with aptX HD Bluetooth, dual coaxial and TOSLINK inputs, as well as USB-A and USB-B digital connections, the D7 and D9 offer versatile connectivity options. Users can enjoy analogue outputs through balanced XLR and single-ended RCA, with the flexibility of variable or fixed modes to function either as a DAC or a pre-amplifier. Additionally, both models support high-resolution audio formats, including PCM up to 32bit/768kHz, DSD up to DSD512, and MQA, ensuring exceptional sound quality.
The D7 and D9 share several core features, such as five digital filter settings with 2x upsampling and a robust 6.4mm headphone output capable of driving 600mW into 20 – 600 Ohms. However, the D9 distinguishes itself with a larger footprint and enhanced specifications. While the D7 features a monochrome OLED display and is powered via an external brick, the D9 boasts a 2.8″ color IPS LCD and an internal transformer with an IEC socket. The D9 also includes LDAC support for Bluetooth and an additional AES/EBU input, catering to more demanding audio setups.
At the heart of the D7 lies the ESS Labs ES9038Q2M DAC chip, a proven component also utilized in Audiolab’s 7000A and 6000A MkII integrated amplifiers. This chip, combined with Audiolab’s proprietary HyperStream II architecture and Time Domain Jitter Eliminator, ensures ultra-low noise and a high dynamic range. In contrast, the D9 is powered by the flagship ESS Labs ES9038PRO chip, offering eight channels compared to the D7’s two. This upgrade, along with an ultra-precision master clock and Class A post-DAC filter, delivers superior sonic clarity and dynamic range, positioning the D9 as a top-tier option for audiophiles seeking the highest performance.
Both models maintain Audiolab’s commitment to high-fidelity audio with features such as MQA decoding, Roon Tested certification, and extensive digital and analogue connectivity. The D7 is priced at £449, making it an attractive option for those seeking advanced DAC functionality without a premium price tag. The D9, with its enhanced capabilities and superior components, is available for £1099. Both DACs are offered in sleek black or silver finishes and will be available for purchase starting in May.
Audiolab’s introduction of the D7 and D9 DACs builds on the legacy of the M-DAC series, offering audiophiles advanced technical specifications and versatile connectivity in compact designs. With their robust feature sets and high-resolution audio support, the D7 and D9 are set to become essential components in discerning audio setups.
