Fonolab Qvattvor 4x4 Second Generation Now with Dual Mono Design and Tamura Transformers

12 January 2025 by Mike Danyk

Czech audio manufacturer Fonolab has unveiled the second generation of its Qvattvor 4×4 Dual Mono step-up transformer designed for moving coil (MC) cartridges. This new transformer adopts a dual mono configuration and is housed in a compact steel casing. Specifically, it's composed of two separate enclosures for the transformers in each channel, connected by a common aluminum front panel.

As many of us appreciate, an MC transformer is a passive device that boosts the weak signal from an MC cartridge to the level of a moving magnet (MM) cartridge. This allows for the use of MM phono preamps with MC cartridges, enhancing compatibility across different audio setups.

The Fonolab Qvattvor 4×4 Dual Mono is equipped with both balanced XLR connectors and unbalanced RCA analog outputs. Embracing a fully balanced topology, each channel operates with two transformers, which contributes to superior signal integrity and channel separation. The circuitry incorporates audiophile-grade transformers from the renowned Japanese company Tamura, known for their exceptional build quality and performance.

Technical Specifications of the Fonolab Qvattvor 4×4 Dual Mono:

  • Input Impedance: 0–3 Ω / 40 Ω
  • Output Impedance: 4 kΩ
  • Frequency Response: 10 Hz to 100 kHz (±1.0 dB)
  • Channel Separation: >60 dB (20 Hz–50 kHz)
  • Gain Ratio: 1:36 / 1:10

The meticulous design ensures optimal shielding by housing each channel in its own enclosure. This attention to detail caters to audiophiles seeking high-end performance and unparalleled precision in their vinyl playback systems.
