The Sony TC-9040 is a 4-channel tape machine manufactured between 1971 and 1975 in Japan. It features a synchronized track mechanism allowing both playback monitoring and recording, making it perfect for multi-track recording sessions. The device supports a variety of tape speeds: 38 cm/s, 19 cm/s, and 9.5 cm/s. It utilizes a closed loop dual capstan system powered by an AC servo motor, ensuring stable playback and recording characteristics. The TC-9040 is equipped with a speed tuning mechanism, permitting speed adjustments of ± 5% during playback. Other features include automatic head-out (APS) and automatic stop (ATS) functions, alongside a tape selector for compatibility with SLH tapes and a built-in reel lock mechanism for enhanced usability. The unit aims to reduce operational noise, especially during playback and recording. Its overall dimensions are 440 mm wide, 560 mm high, and 255 mm deep, with a weight of approximately 28 kg. The original price at launch was around 320,000 Yen.
