Ortofon has unveiled its latest innovation in moving coil technology, the MC X series, at the High End Show 2025 in Munich. This new lineup comprises four distinct models: MC X10, MC X20, MC X30, and MC X40, each tailored to meet varying demands of audiophiles seeking exceptional sound reproduction.
At the core of the MC X series lies an advanced stainless steel frame manufactured using Metal Injection Moulding (MIM). This honeycomb-structured frame ensures superior mechanical stability, providing an ideal foundation for accurate and faithful playback of vinyl records. The application of Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) coating post-molding enhances both the aesthetic appeal and the durability of the cartridges over time.
Each cartridge in the MC X series is equipped with four silver-wire coils of high purity and a newly designed magnetic system featuring a solid pole tube integrated into the rear magnetic yoke. This configuration maximizes efficiency, delivering a clean and robust output signal. Additionally, the series incorporates bespoke rubber damping systems developed in-house, which effectively control coil movement, minimize unwanted vibrations, and ensure precise tracking with reduced distortion.
The MC X10 serves as the entry point with an elliptical diamond stylus (r/R 8/18 μm) mounted on an aluminum cantilever, achieving a channel separation of 24 dB at 1 kHz. Progressing through the range, the MC X20 and MC X30 enhance clarity and resolution with refined stylus profiles, boasting channel separations of 25 dB and 26 dB respectively. The flagship MC X40 features a Shibata diamond stylus (r/R 6/50 μm) on a boron cantilever, delivering unparalleled transparency and responsiveness, also with a 26 dB channel separation.
All models maintain a channel balance within 0.5 dB at 1 kHz, weigh 8.6 grams, and recommend a tracking force of 2 grams with an impedance exceeding 50 Ohms. The frequency response spans from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, with the MC X10 slightly broader at ±2 dB. European retail prices start at €299 for the MC X10, scaling up to €999 for the high-end MC X40, positioning the MC X series as a versatile option for discerning vinyl enthusiasts.
