Sony has suspended home cinema projector sales in the EU and UK due to export control regulations and sanctions.
Affected models include premium Bravia projectors with native 4K resolution and advanced features like HDR support.
The decision stems from supply chain issues linked to sanctions on Russia and Belarus.
Sony has announced the suspension of its home cinema projector sales across all European Union countries and the United Kingdom. This decision affects the entire lineup of Sony’s projectors, including the highly regarded Bravia-branded models such as the Bravia Projector 9 (VPL-XW8100). While current inventory in these regions will continue to be available for purchase, no new shipments will be dispatched moving forward.
The move is primarily attributed to Sony’s need to comply with recent European export control regulations and trade restrictions, particularly those related to sanctions imposed on Russia and Belarus amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. According to Sony Europe, these sanctions have impacted one of their key suppliers, necessitating the discontinuation of select projector models to ensure adherence to applicable laws and responsible business practices.
Technical enthusiasts will note that Sony's projector range includes native 4K models and a variety of light source technologies, distinguishing them in a market that is increasingly becoming niche. Models affected by this withdrawal include the VPL-XW8100 series, VPL-XW6100 series, and several others within the VPL-FHZ and VPL-PHZ lines. These projectors are known for their high-resolution output and advanced features such as pixel-shifting and HDR support, although they still require optimal room conditions and compatible screens to achieve the best performance.
Despite the challenges posed by stricter regulations and supply chain disruptions, Sony has assured its European partners of a smooth transition, focusing on the liquidation of existing stock without expanding into new shipments. This strategic shift underscores the complexities faced by manufacturers in navigating evolving international trade landscapes while maintaining compliance and quality standards.
As the projector market continues to evolve, Sony’s exit from the European and UK markets may prompt both consumers and industry observers to reassess their home cinema setups and explore alternative brands that can meet the growing demand for high-fidelity visual experiences.
