AVI Hi-Fi was founded in 1989 by Martin Grindrod, a Bristol University electronics graduate with a background in defense avionics. Based in Stroud, Gloucestershire (Unit F3-C3 Bath Rd Trading Estate, Lightpill, GL5 3QF), AVI pioneered active loudspeaker technology and was probably the first British company to develop multi-room audio systems. Their revolutionary breakthrough came in 2007 with the ADM9 active speakers, which were among the first to feature built-in DACs and remote-controlled multi-input preamps. Martin Grindrod and Ashley James made the strategic decision to cease legacy separates production in 2006, focusing entirely on innovative active speaker technology. AVI's active loudspeakers eliminate the need for external amplifiers by incorporating high-quality amplification directly into the speakers. The company continues to operate from their Gloucestershire facility, maintaining their position as innovators in active speaker design. Their approach combines technical expertise with practical solutions, delivering high-performance audio systems that simplify setup while maximizing sound quality for discerning listeners.
