Founded January 25, 1989 by Swiss engineer Uli Behringer in Willich, Germany, Behringer emerged from a struggling musician's inability to afford studio equipment. Born April 13, 1961 in Baden, Switzerland to a nuclear physicist father and pianist mother, Uli built his first synthesizer (UB-1) at age 16. After studying piano at Robert Schumann Conservatory and sound engineering at Fachhochschule, he established Behringer with the philosophy of delivering life-changing products at affordable prices. Initially manufacturing in Germany, production shifted to China (1990) with Uli relocating to Hong Kong (1997) for quality oversight. Now owned by Music Tribe (formerly Music Group), the company operates from Music Tribe City factory in Zhongshan, China, producing synthesizers, mixers, audio interfaces, and amplifiers. By 2007, Behringer ranked among the world's 14 largest music equipment manufacturers, democratizing music technology accessibility worldwide.
