Dahlquist was founded in 1972-1973 by Jon Dahlquist, an aerospace engineer who worked on the lunar landing module, and Saul Marantz, with headquarters in Freeport and later Hauppauge, New York. The company revolutionized speaker design with their iconic DQ-10, introduced in 1973, featuring Jon Dahlquist's innovation of time phase alignment with drivers physically arranged to align voice coils on the same plane. They manufactured 55,000 DQ-10 speakers (27,500 pairs) selling for $425 each. Key personnel included Carl Marchisotto (chief engineer from 1976) and Sid Smith. The original company ceased operations after Jon Dahlquist's severe automobile accident in 1989 and subsequent sale in 1990. While the original innovative team is gone, the Dahlquist legacy continues through a parts and service operation, and the DQ-10 remains highly sought after in the vintage audio market.
