IMF Electronics Ltd was a pioneering British loudspeaker manufacturer founded in 1968 by John Wright, John Hayes, and David Brown, specializing in transmission line loudspeaker technology which they were the first to successfully commercialize. Founded through British-American collaboration with hi-fi importer Irving M. Fried (whose initials formed IMF), the company produced legendary models including the IMF Monitor, TLS80, Reference Standard Professional Monitor, and Studio series, utilizing innovative transmission line designs with KEF B139 drivers in meandering cabinet tunnels. After forming a joint venture with German driver manufacturer Elac, IMF evolved into TDL Electronics in the late 1980s, continuing transmission line production throughout the 80s and 90s until founder John Wright's death in 1999 ended the original company. Though the TDL brand was later acquired by Audio Partnerships (Richer Sounds), the current models are standard bass reflex speakers rather than the innovative transmission line designs that made IMF/TDL legendary among audiophiles for their wide-band performance and pioneering engineering excellence in British high-fidelity audio.
