Founded by John Michell in the early 1960s, J.A. Michell Engineering Ltd has been perfecting analog vinyl playback for over half a century. Known for creating models for films including the spaceship 'Discovery' for '2001: A Space Odyssey' which inspired the GyroDec design. The company invented the record clamp in 1977 and launched their first turntable, the Michell Reference Electronic, the same year. The iconic GyroDec turntable was introduced in the early 1980s and remains in production. Following John Michell's passing in 2003, the business continues under his daughters Julie and Beverley, and son-in-law Stephen.
