Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MFSL or MoFi) is the undisputed leader in audiophile recordings since 1977, specializing in the production of premier audiophile vinyl records and hybrid Super Audio CDs sourced from original master tapes. Originally founded by recording engineer Brad Miller in the late 1950s and 1960s with environmental and locomotive sound recordings that drew interest from audiophiles, the company was formally established as a record label in 1977 by Miller and entrepreneur Gary Giorgi in Veradale, Washington, near Spokane. Under the leadership of president Herb Belkin from 1979 until his death in 2001, Mobile Fidelity pioneered half-speed mastering techniques and Original Master Recording vinyl LPs without compression and with minimal equalization, creating a catalog of over 600 albums including landmark records by Miles Davis, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Fleetwood Mac, Frank Sinatra, and many other iconic artists. After closing in November 1999 due to financial difficulties, the company's assets were acquired in 2001 by Jim Davis of Music Direct in Chicago, Illinois, where Mobile Fidelity now operates with 18 employees while maintaining California-based mastering facilities staffed by industry-leading engineers and pressing operations at sister company Fidelity Record Pressing in Oxnard, California. Globally recognized for its distinctive album cover strips, numbered-edition releases, and exceptional collectibility among audiophiles, Mobile Fidelity continues its legacy of fiercely independent operations, expanding into MoFi Electronics in 2016 with turntable manufacturing based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, while maintaining its commitment to capturing perfect sound reproduction for discerning music lovers worldwide through meticulous attention to original tape sources and cutting-edge mastering technology.
