Founded around 1996 by veteran mobile sound professionals from Rockford Fosgate, PPI, and other companies, Phaze Audio was formed to market and distribute Butler Audio's TubeDriver amplifiers - tube-driven amplification systems for car audio applications. Initially granted exclusive licensing for marketing TubeDriver amplifiers, Phaze Audio received manufacturing rights in late 1997. In 1998, seeking accelerated market expansion, Phaze Audio purchased Precision Power, Inc. (PPI), becoming Phaze Audio/PPI. The company redesigned the original Butler Audio TubeDriver amplifiers but was subsequently purchased in late 1999, ending TubeDriver brand production and sales. Phaze Audio represented a brief but significant period in car audio history when tube amplification technology was adapted for mobile applications, bridging high-end home audio concepts with automotive sound systems. The company's acquisition of PPI and subsequent sale marked the end of an innovative chapter in car audio amplification technology.
