Founded in 1978 by Richard Foos and Harold Bronson, Rhino Records evolved from a Westwood Boulevard record store opened in 1973 into one of America's most influential specialty record labels and reissue companies. Originally established by Foos, who began selling blues records from his car trunk before opening the shop near UCLA campus, and Bronson, who joined as store manager in 1974, the company pioneered the catalog reissue business during the 1970s and 1980s with compilation albums spanning pop, rock, R&B, and comedy releases. Through strategic partnerships beginning with a 50% acquisition by Time Warner in 1992 and full acquisition in 1998, Rhino became the catalog division of Warner Music Group following the 2004 industry reorganization. Now headquartered in Burbank, California, under CEO Mark Pinkus, Rhino Entertainment serves as the definitive home for Warner Music's legendary catalog including Warner Bros., Atlantic, and Elektra Records archives. Despite the 2003 departure of co-founders Foos and Bronson, the company continues to set the standard for excellence in both physical and digital reissue markets, maintaining its reputation as the music industry's premier catalog development and marketing division with comprehensive archival expertise spanning decades of popular music history.
