Founded in 1932 by Harry Roberts and Leslie Bidmead, who financed their first London Soho factory by selling Bidmead's motorbike, Roberts Radio has maintained its position as the oldest active radio manufacturer in the UK for over 90 years. During WWII, the company relocated from London to East Molesey in Surrey, shifting production from domestic radios to morse code tappers. The company earned a royal warrant in the 1950s after Her Majesty the Queen purchased radios for personal use and as gifts. Roberts Radio pioneered DAB digital radio technology, launching the world's first portable DAB radio, the Classic 2000, in May 2000 for field trials with the BBC and overseas broadcasters. Under Glen Dimplex Group ownership since 1994, the company moved from Surrey to Mexborough, South Yorkshire, before relocating to Chertsey in Surrey around 2020. Roberts continued innovating with their first internet radio (WM-201) in 2007 and the first solar-powered DAB radio in 2008. Today, the company maintains their heritage of making exceptional audio products with their motto 'Sounds for Generations,' serving consumers across 90 years of continuous operation and technological evolution in radio broadcasting.
