Spendor was founded in 1969 by Spencer Hughes, a BBC sound engineer, and his wife Dorothy. The company name derives from their first names - 'Spen' and 'Dor.' Spencer applied his BBC sound engineering expertise to create their first loudspeaker, the BC1, while still working for the BBC. This revolutionary design quickly became the monitor of choice for broadcasters and recording studios worldwide. Since 2000, Spendor has been owned by Philip Swift, a speaker designer and co-founder of Audiolab, who personally knew Spencer Hughes. The company maintains its commitment to British manufacturing, designing, engineering, and assembling all loudspeakers at their production facility in South Yorkshire. Spendor is unique in manufacturing every component in-house, including speaker drivers, crossovers, and cabinetry, all within their UK facility. For over 50 years, Spendor has maintained its reputation for high-quality, hand-crafted speakers used by audiophiles and professionals globally.
