Thomson is a historic French electronics brand originally founded in 1893 as Compagnie Française Thomson-Houston in Paris, named after electrical engineer Elihu Thomson. The company became Thomson SA in 1982 following nationalization and developed into a major multinational technology corporation producing a comprehensive range of consumer electronics including televisions, radio sets, audio devices, speakers, headphones, and professional audio-video equipment. Throughout its evolution, Thomson merged with Hotchkiss-Brandt in 1966 and acquired numerous technology companies, becoming a significant player in the global electronics industry. The company underwent major transformations, rebranding to Technicolor SA in 2010 and most recently becoming Vantiva in September 2022. While the Thomson brand name continues through licensing arrangements for consumer electronics worldwide, the original parent company now operates as Vantiva, focusing on Connected Home solutions (broadband and set-top boxes), Smart Spaces technology, and HomeSight connected care platforms. The Thomson brand legacy in audio equipment remains through various licensing partnerships, though the company's primary focus has shifted from consumer electronics manufacturing to technology services and solutions, representing a significant evolution from its historical role as a major French audio and electronics manufacturer.
