Established in the early 1930s by carpenter Stanley Timms in Harrow, Middlesex, Lockwood began as a cabinet making business inspired by the UK's first television broadcast in 1936, initially manufacturing radio cabinets sold via mail order. The company became renowned as manufacturers of recording and broadcast studio equipment, particularly monitor loudspeakers designed in cooperation with the BBC using Tannoy drivers. Lockwood Majors, launched in the 1960s, became studio reference standards at Abbey Road, Olympic, Chappell, and Trident studios, trusted by legends including The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Queen, and Elton John. In 1984, when Lockwood was Tannoy's biggest OEM customer, Tannoy cut them off overnight to boost their own sales. A fire in the early 1980s devastated the Lockwood factory, coinciding with Tannoy's supply limitation, causing production to slow and the factory to be sold. The company was revived with a new Lockwood Loudspeakers Limited incorporated on July 20, 2022, in Edgware, England. The family-owned business partnered with Volt to refine and remanufacture the original 1970s Tannoy HPD units in 10", 12", and 15" sizes, continuing both Tannoy service through Lockwood Audio and producing classic monitor designs with modern refinements.
