Astell&Kern has introduced the PD10, a versatile portable audio player designed for both home and on-the-go use. Departing from the company’s traditional design, the PD10 replaces the iconic volume wheel with a more streamlined button interface, enhancing ease of use without compromising on aesthetics. The device is accompanied by a docking station, enabling seamless integration into home audio setups.
At the heart of the PD10 lies the proprietary HEXA-audio architecture, previously featured in the flagship SP3000 model. This new player is the first to incorporate Asahi Kasei’s AK4498EX DAC chips, utilizing four DACs and two digital signal processors to ensure complete separation of digital and analog pathways. This design choice allows the PD10 to maintain exceptional sound quality across various headphone connections by avoiding internal analog signal conversion compromises.
The PD10 is equipped with dual headphone amplifiers tailored for different listening needs. The Normal Gain amplifier prioritizes clarity and detail, while the High Gain amplifier delivers increased power and drive for more demanding headphones. This automatic switching based on headphone impedance—defaulting to Normal Gain for impedances up to 32 Ohms and High Gain for higher impedances—ensures optimal performance without manual adjustments. Additionally, the device features a crossfeed function, which blends audio channels to create a more natural soundstage and reduce listener fatigue during extended listening sessions.
Connectivity options for the PD10 are robust, featuring Bluetooth 5.3 with support for aptX HD, LDAC, and LHDC codecs, as well as dual-band Wi-Fi. The player also serves as a USB DAC and supports DLNA, AirPlay, and is certified Roon Ready. Storage is ample with 256 GB built-in memory expandable via microSD cards up to 2 TB. The 6-inch Full HD display, combined with features like ReplayGain and AK File Drop, provides a user-friendly interface for managing high-resolution audio files.
Constructed from stainless steel and glass, the PD10 is ergonomically optimized for one-handed use, ensuring both durability and comfort. Scheduled for release in May 2025, the PD10, along with its docking station, will be available at a recommended retail price of $2,499. This latest offering from Astell&Kern reaffirms the brand’s commitment to delivering high-fidelity audio experiences tailored to the discerning audiophile.
