Electrocompaniet Unveils the EC 5 Preamplifier

12 May 2025 by Mike Danyk

Norwegian audio manufacturer Electrocompaniet is set to unveil the highly anticipated EC 5 preamplifier at the upcoming High End audio fair in Munich next week. This milestone product represents the culmination of over a decade of meticulous development, blending refined analog clarity with advanced technological innovations and a modern take on classic design aesthetics.

The EC 5 operates in a pure Class A configuration, featuring a fully discrete dual-mono design. Each channel is powered by its own independent supply, utilizing robust 80 VA toroidal transformers and a substantial 15,000 μF storage capacity per channel. This expansive power supply ensures exceptional performance across various loads, resulting in remarkably low distortion and an extensive frequency response that caters to the most discerning audiophiles.

Employing Electrocompaniet’s proprietary AmpliWire topology, the EC 5 delivers high bandwidth and impressive slew rates through fully discrete components without capacitors in the signal path. The minimalist negative feedback design enhances its ability to handle long cable runs and low-impedance loads with ease. Additionally, the preamplifier is equipped with essential protective features, including internal temperature monitoring and DC fault protection at the outputs, ensuring both stability and reliability.

At the heart of the EC 5 lies a unique patented volume control system, developed through a decade of dedicated research. This innovative design eliminates mechanical switches and relays, instead utilizing parallel resistor networks managed by custom electronic switches. Such a configuration maintains a consistent signal path across over 900 adjustment steps at a 0.1 dB resolution, spanning from –100 dB to +20 dB, thereby preserving signal integrity at all volume levels.

Connectivity options are extensive, featuring four XLR inputs and two RCA inputs per channel, alongside balanced and single-ended main outputs and dedicated tape outputs. The EC 5 also includes three 12V trigger outputs and an IR output for seamless integration with existing systems. While it lacks digital connections, the inclusion of a LAN port facilitates app control and potential firmware updates. The front panel is adorned with a touch-sensitive volume control and a 7-inch IPS color display, marrying traditional design elements with contemporary functionality. Visitors interested in experiencing the EC 5 firsthand can visit Electrocompaniet’s booth in Atrium 4.2, room F225, at the Munich trade fair next week.
