Klipsch, the renowned Arkansas-based speaker manufacturer established in 1946, has unveiled significant updates to two of its iconic horn speakers: the Klipschorn AK7 and the La Scala AL6. The latest revisions introduce the option to replace the internal crossover with an external frequency crossover, enhancing customization and sound fidelity for audiophiles.
The Klipschorn AK7 continues the legacy of its predecessors with a robust build housing separate compression drivers for the high and mid frequencies, each routed through dedicated Tractrix horns. A new Tractrix-Horn design in the midrange aims to deliver more natural sound reproduction, complemented by an expanded midrange driver that doubles in diameter from 38 millimeters to 76 millimeters. The high-frequency driver now incorporates a newly developed phase plug to ensure a more uniform dispersion, contributing to a smoother and more balanced audio experience. With a sensitivity rating of 103 dB, the AK7 efficiently delivers powerful sound without requiring excessive amplification.
Meanwhile, the slightly more compact La Scala AL6 adopts similar advancements with optimized Tractrix horns and the introduction of a vented bass enclosure. Despite its reduced size, the AL6 maintains impressive bass performance, integrating a 30-centimeter driver that projects deep within the listening space. The vented design combines the benefits of horn-loaded and bass reflex systems, resulting in a powerful and extended low-frequency response. The La Scala AL6 also features the same high sensitivity of 103 dB, ensuring robust output while maintaining efficiency.
A defining feature of these updates is the optional Heritage Active Crossover. This digital signal processing system allows for precise frequency distribution to each driver, ensuring a linear frequency response and improved timing. By splitting the signal from the preamplifier to up to three amplifier channels per speaker, the Heritage Active Crossover enables greater control over the audio setup, catering to bespoke configurations while retaining compatibility with standard single-amplifier setups. This enhancement significantly elevates the overall sound quality and performance of both the AK7 and AL6 models.
Available in elegant wood finishes such as American Walnut, Black Ash, and the new American Auburn, the updated Klipschorn AK7 and La Scala AL6 are set to be available in May 2025. The Klipschorn AK7 is priced at approximately €26,000, while the La Scala AL6 is available for around €20,000. The optional external Heritage Active Crossover is offered at an additional €4,000. These enhancements position the Klipschorn AK7 and La Scala AL6 as formidable contenders in the high-end audio market, blending iconic design with cutting-edge technology to deliver an exceptional listening experience.
