Pro-Ject has introduced the Automat A1.2, an enhanced version of its popular fully automatic turntable, set to launch in April at £469 (€499) or approximately $605 (AU$965). This update maintains the core design that appeals to both vinyl newcomers and seasoned enthusiasts, while incorporating several significant upgrades to improve audio fidelity and user experience.
A standout improvement is the transition to a die-cast aluminium platter from the previous stamped version. This new CNC-machined platter offers higher mass inertia, better balance, and reduced resonance, contributing to a more stable and cleaner playback. Additionally, the manufacturing process enhancements ensure greater precision and consistency, minimizing vibrations and enhancing overall sound quality. The motor has also been refined to provide a more precise and vibration-free rotation, further elevating the listening experience.
The Automat A1.2 features an 8.3-inch aluminium tonearm paired with a newly designed carbon fiber-reinforced polymer headshell. This combination reduces weight while increasing stability, allowing for improved tracking and detailed sound reproduction. The pre-aligned Pro-Ject Pick It MM E cartridge with a hyperconical stylus replaces the previous model, offering heightened detail retrieval and dynamic range. The tonearm’s tracking force and anti-skating are pre-set, simplifying setup for beginners without sacrificing performance for audiophiles.
In terms of functionality, the A1.2 retains its fully automatic operation, eliminating the need for belt changes or manual needle placement. The electronic speed switching between 33 and 45 RPM is seamless, and the fully mechanical automation system operates without additional electronics, ensuring that playback remains free from electronic interference. The turntable also includes an integrated, switchable phono pre-amplifier and comes with a high-quality Connect it E semi-balanced RCA cable, facilitating easy connectivity to various audio setups.
Encased in a resonant-damped wooden chassis with silicone-damped feet, the Automat A1.2 minimizes unwanted vibrations and enhances sound clarity. The new white color option broadens its aesthetic appeal, complementing the existing black variant. With meticulous craftsmanship from Germany and the Czech Republic, the Pro-Ject Automat A1.2 stands out as a compelling choice for those seeking an effortless entry into vinyl without compromising on technical excellence and audio performance.
