Rotel Unveils Michi Q5 Transport DAC, Launching March 2025

13 February 2025 by Mike Danyk

Rotel has unveiled the Michi Q5 Transport DAC, a high-performance CD player that promises to elevate the listening experience. Combining cutting-edge technology with meticulous craftsmanship, the Q5 serves as a CD transport, a CD player, and a standalone DAC.

The Q5 features a top-loading CD mechanism crafted from CNC-machined aluminum, ensuring durability and a sleek design. This mechanism is spring-mounted to reduce unwanted vibrations, providing a stable platform for flawless CD playback.

At its core lies the premium 8-channel ESS ES9028PRO DAC, allocating four channels each to the left and right stereo tracks. This configuration enables precise digital-to-analog conversion, delivering exceptional sound quality with minimal distortion. The fully balanced and fully differential circuitry further enhances audio fidelity.

Connectivity options are abundant. The Q5 offers TOSLINK and coaxial digital outputs, alongside balanced XLR and single-ended analog outputs. For those looking to integrate digital sources, the DAC supports 32-bit/384kHz PC-USB (with MQA and DSD256 decoding) and 24-bit/192kHz optical and coaxial inputs, ensuring versatile compatibility with modern audio systems.

Powering the unit are dual in-house-manufactured toroidal transformers. These transformers isolate digital and analog voltage supplies, significantly reducing noise and interference. Additionally, the CD drive motor's voltage and current supplies are electrically isolated from sensitive audio signals, preventing any potential motor noise from affecting sound quality.

The front panel boasts a full-color TFT display that showcases CD album artwork, adding a visual element to the auditory experience. Control is facilitated by the included Michi remote, while RS232 and Ethernet ports ensure seamless integration with popular automation systems.

Physically, the Q5 is substantial, measuring 485mm (W) x 150mm (H) x 452mm (D) and tipping the scales at 23.5kg. This heft is a testament to the robust build quality and components housed within.

The Michi Q5 Transport DAC is slated for release in March 2025. Pricing is set at £5,499 in the UK, $6,999 in the US, and €5,999 in Europe. It's a significant investment, but for those seeking top-tier audio performance and build quality, the Q5 stands out as a compelling option.
