SEAS Launches Toy DIY Kit for Building Custom Compact Speakers

26 February 2025 by Mike Danyk

SEAS has introduced the Toy DIY Kit, a new opportunity for audio enthusiasts to build their own compact speakers. The kit features the C16NX001/X Metamodal TPCD coaxial driver, specifically designed to demonstrate SEAS’ cutting-edge Metamodal technology. This driver incorporates a Composite Sound Metamodal diaphragm for both the woofer and tweeter, utilizing a second-generation material that achieves an optimal balance of low weight, high stiffness, and controlled damping.

The driver’s construction includes titanium voice coil formers, which enhance force transfer and reduce mechanical damping, resulting in exceptionally clean and transient sound reproduction. Additionally, the magnet systems are FEA optimized with precisely fitted copper components, ensuring improved linearity, high power handling, and minimal distortion. The crown-shaped copper tweeter support is designed to accommodate damping material, effectively eliminating resonance between the tweeter housing and woofer voice coil former.

The Toy DIY Kit comes with a sealed enclosure of 5.7 liters, filled to 70% capacity with polyester foam damping material to ensure complete airtightness. This design achieves a Q-box of 0.59, providing a balanced extension of low frequencies, excellent transient response, and a flat sound pressure level. Builders have the option to choose between active and passive crossovers. The passive configuration utilizes metalized polypropylene capacitors and a 10W metal oxide resistor, while the active setup includes a miniDSP 2x4HD for extensive tuning capabilities.

Designed as a point source, the coaxial driver delivers precise and detailed sound, suitable for both stereo and surround sound setups. The compact nature of the Toy DIY Kit allows it to seamlessly integrate with additional components, such as the SEAS Extreme subwoofer, to enhance the low-frequency performance. Detailed schematics and setup files are provided, enabling builders to customize the crossover configurations and explore various tuning options.

Available through SEAS and its global distributors, the Toy DIY Kit exemplifies SEAS’ commitment to advancing high-performance audio solutions. This release is part of SEAS’ ongoing update program under Merry Electronics, which focuses on enhancing both high-end consumer products and drivers for commercial applications.
