Shanling SMT1.3 HiFi Streamer: Advanced Network Transport for Audiophile Systems

9 April 2025 by Mike Danyk

Last fall, Shanling Audio unveiled the Shanling SM1.3 network streamer, sparking considerable interest among discerning music enthusiasts and tech aficionados. Building on this success, Shanling has introduced the Shanling SMT1.3 HiFi Streamer, a dedicated network transport designed without an integrated DAC, making it an ideal addition for systems that already incorporate a high-quality external DAC or an integrated amplifier with one.

At the core of the SMT1.3 lies a newly developed platform based on the Rockchip chipset, featuring a 64-bit ARM Cortex A55 processor, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage. Running on Google Android 12, the device supports SSD M2 storage expansion up to 2TB and offers multiple USB ports for external storage connectivity. Users can navigate the transport via a sleek 4.96-inch Sharp touchscreen or the dedicated Shanling Eddict Controller app available for both iOS and Android devices.

The SMT1.3 is equipped with an XMOS XU316 USB-B port that collaborates with the CT7302CL dual-channel audio bridge, facilitating high-performance signal processing capabilities such as upsampling. Precision timing is ensured by Accusilicon clock generators operating at 49.152 MHz and 45.158 MHz. For versatile digital output options, the transport provides I2S with FPGA support, USB-Audio, AES/EBU, BNC, and both optical and coaxial S/PDIF interfaces. Network integration is seamless with Gigabit Ethernet and built-in Wi-Fi supporting IEEE 802.11ac standards. Additionally, the device boasts a high-quality linear power supply featuring a toroidal transformer for optimal performance.

Functionally, the Shanling SMT1.3 serves as both a music server and player, adhering to the UPnP standard with DLNA certification. Content can be accessed over the network via SAMBA protocol, and the device is compatible with Apple AirPlay 2. Streaming applications such as Spotify, TIDAL, Qobuz, Apple Music, and more are readily accessible directly from the transporter, thanks to the flexibility provided by Android 12.

In terms of audio fidelity, the SMT1.3 can handle Linear PCM signals up to 32-bit/768 kHz and DSD512, with the capability to upscale lower resolutions. High-resolution audio output is achievable through I2S and USB connections, while other digital outputs like S/PDIF and AES/EBU are limited to 24-bit/192 kHz or DSD64 in DoP format. Encased in an elegant aluminum chassis available in black or silver, the transport measures 280 x 76 x 280 mm and weighs 6.4 kg. Priced at $849, the Shanling SMT1.3 HiFi Streamer is set to enhance high-fidelity audio setups with its robust feature set and sophisticated design.
