Sony Releases the UBP-X700/K UHD Blu-ray Player with Enhanced Features

18 March 2025 by Mike Danyk

Sony has unveiled the UBP-X700/K, a streamlined iteration of its existing UHD Blu-ray player. This latest model marks Sony's first new UHD player release since 2019, emphasizing the company's continued commitment to physical media in a market where competitors like Samsung, Oppo, and LG have exited the Blu-ray segment. The UBP-X700/K differentiates itself by removing several networking and streaming functionalities, catering to users who prioritize high-fidelity playback over connected features.

The UBP-X700/K omits the Video & TV SideView app, eliminates network connectivity for streaming, and excludes popular video streaming services such as Netflix and YouTube. Additionally, the model no longer supports Spotify Connect or screen mirroring capabilities. Despite these reductions, the player retains an Ethernet RJ45 port, though the presence of Wi-Fi remains uncertain. It features two HDMI outputs, one of which is dedicated to audio, ensuring robust connectivity options for various audio-visual setups.

In terms of performance, the UBP-X700/K does not compromise on quality. It supports both HDR10 and Dolby Vision for enhanced high dynamic range visuals, and is compatible with advanced audio formats including Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. This ensures a rich and immersive viewing experience, whether enjoying UHD Blu-rays, standard Blu-rays, or DVDs. The retention of these high-end specifications makes the UBP-X700/K a relevant choice for enthusiasts who value superior audio-visual performance from their physical media players.

The UBP-X700/K is scheduled for release in April or May 2025, with availability varying by region. In Japan, the new model is priced approximately 25% higher than the current UBP-X700 street price, reflecting its refined feature set. As Sony continues to sustain its presence in the Blu-ray market, the UBP-X700/K exemplifies the company's dedication to delivering high-quality physical media solutions for discerning audiophiles and home theater aficionados.
