15 May 2025 by Mike Danyk

Sony is set to elevate the wireless audio experience with the upcoming release of the WH-1000XM6, scheduled for May 15, 2025. Enthusiasts can tune into Sony’s official YouTube stream at 18:00 CET to witness the unveiling of this flagship Over-Ear headphone model. Priced at €449 in Germany, the WH-1000XM6 promises an array of enhancements over its predecessor, the XM5.

The new iteration boasts a refined design with a seamlessly integrated, one-piece plastic structure that eliminates stitching on the earcups, enhancing both aesthetics and durability. Metal hinges replace the previous plastic ones, allowing the headphones to fold compactly for easier transport. Additionally, the transport case has been redesigned with a magnetic closure, moving away from the traditional zipper mechanism for a more secure and user-friendly experience.

Under the hood, the WH-1000XM6 is powered by Sony’s latest Mediatek MT2833 processor, ensuring superior noise cancellation and sound quality. Supporting the advanced LC3 audio codec, these headphones deliver high-fidelity audio with reduced latency. Users can expect a robust battery life of up to 30 hours, facilitated by an internal 4.56 Wh battery, surpassing the XM5’s endurance.

Control and connectivity have also seen significant upgrades. The left earcup houses the power button, 3.5mm audio input, and noise cancellation/ambient sound toggle, while the right side features a USB-C port and an LED indicator. With support for Bluetooth 5.3 and enhanced multipoint connectivity, seamless switching between devices is more efficient than ever. Although Auracast is not supported, the inclusion of the LC3 codec provides improved audio streaming capabilities.

The WH-1000XM6 also introduces subtle design tweaks aimed at improving water resistance, although no specific IP rating has been confirmed. With its blend of advanced technology, refined design, and extended battery life, the WH-1000XM6 is poised to set a new benchmark in the premium headphone market.
