Royal Philips was founded in 1891 by Gerard Philips and his father Frederik in Eindhoven, Netherlands, initially manufacturing carbon-filament lamps. Anton Philips joined in 1895, transforming it into a global electronics powerhouse. The company pioneered numerous audio innovations including the compact cassette (1962), videocassette recorder (1971), and co-developed the Compact Disc (1982). Headquartered in Amsterdam since 1997, Philips transformed into a healthcare technology leader, divesting its audio/video division to Funai Electric and spinning off lighting as Signify. Today's Philips focuses on three divisions: Diagnosis & Treatment (MRI, CT, ultrasound), Connected Care (patient monitors, respiratory care), and Personal Health (electric shavers, Sonicare). With 2.4 million LinkedIn followers and operations in 100+ countries, Philips ranks among the Top 3 global healthcare companies. The company sold its Hi-Fi audio business but maintains the brand through licensing agreements.
