The JVC QL-A2 is a semi-automatic direct drive turntable that was produced from 1978 to 1981 in Japan. It features a quartz direct drive system and utilizes a DC servo motor, ensuring precise speed control at both 33 1/3 rpm and 45 rpm. The turntable has an elegant black and silver design, measured at 460 mm in width, 147 mm in height, and 365 mm in depth, with a weighing of 6.5 kg. Notably, the QL-A2 has a stylish aluminum alloy die-cast platter measuring 312 mm, providing a solid foundation for vinyl playback. A standout feature is its < 1.4 seconds start time and a starting torque of 650 g/cm. The tonearm is a statically balanced S-shaped tube, with an effective length of 220 mm and an overhang of 15 mm. It supports tracking forces ranging from 0 to 3 g. The model comes equipped with the MD-1029 dual magnet pickup cell, offering an output voltage of 2.5 mV and optimal tracking force between 1.5 and 2.5 g, with a frequency response of 10 Hz to 25 kHz. Additional features include oil-damped tonearm linkage, an anti-skating device, speed indicator with stroboscope, and rubber-mounted damping feet, all contributing to its operational stability and performance quality. The QL-A2 is noted for its affordability and modifiable aspects, with enthusiasts often improving its performance with additional modifications and upgrades.
