Classic Audio unveils the Spartan 15 MKII Phono Stage
Classic Audio Ltd. has unveiled the Spartan 15 MKII, the latest iteration of its esteemed phono stage designed for moving magnet cartridges. Building on the success of the original Spartan 15, the MKII introduces several thoughtful enhancements that reinforce Classic Audio's commitment to analog precision and sonic transparency. Hand-assembled in Kent, England, the Spartan 15 MKII is housed in a robust, sandblasted aluminum chassis that seamlessly integrates the front and rear panels, featuring laser-etched graphics for added durability and aesthetic appeal.
A standout feature of the Spartan 15 MKII is the expanded low-frequency cross-feed functionality. Unlike its predecessor, which offered a fixed 145 Hz setting, the MKII provides a three-position switch allowing users to select between 100 Hz, 145 Hz, and 200 Hz. This flexibility enables finer control over bass hum and optimizes playback, particularly for vintage or mono recordings. Additionally, the mono switching option remains intact, allowing for effective suppression of stereo noise when playing mono records.
Inside, the Spartan 15 MKII maintains Classic Audio’s philosophy of using high-quality components to ensure long-term stability and precise channel matching. The phono stage employs Panasonic electrolytic capacitors, 1% metal film resistors, and high-precision polypropylene capacitors. These components, combined with a redesigned circuit that includes an external 9V linear power supply, minimize electromagnetic interference and maintain a clean, stable power source. The unit also features separate ±17 V power rails regulated by precision diodes, enhancing thermal stability and reducing power-related artifacts.
Performance-wise, the Spartan 15 MKII delivers an impressive dynamic range exceeding 110 dB and a maximum output level of 10.5 V RMS. The inclusion of a third-order subsonic filter, tuned to 22 Hz using hand-matched film capacitors, effectively eliminates ultra-low-frequency noise without compromising the bass spectrum. With distortion levels maintained below 0.0006% across the 40 Hz to 22 kHz range, the Spartan 15 MKII ensures ultra-clean audio reproduction.
