Frank Zappa’s long-lost 1974 television special, “Cheaper Than Cheep,” has been meticulously restored and is set for release on May 9. This unprecedented archival find offers audiophiles and Zappa enthusiasts a rare glimpse into the maestro’s mid-70s peak, capturing an intimate two-hour performance by the Mothers of Invention during the Roxy-era lineup.
The restoration process leveraged advanced post-production editing tools to synchronize previously unsynced audio and video recordings. The project, spearheaded by Vaultmeister Joe Travers and Director Ahmet Zappa, utilized the original multi-camera footage and audio mastered from the Wally Heider Remote Truck’s 16-track recordings. The final product is available in several formats, including a Blu-ray with Dolby Atmos, 5.1 surround sound, and stereo mixes, as well as a 3LP picture disc vinyl edition.
“Cheaper Than Cheep” not only showcases a dynamic setlist featuring classics like “Cosmik Debris,” “Camarillo Brillo,” and “Inca Roads,” but also includes rare performances and improvisational segments that highlight the technical prowess of the band members. The Super Deluxe box set enriches the experience with a 12-page booklet containing rare images and liner notes from Travers, alongside a heartfelt remembrance from percussionist Ruth Komanoff Underwood.
The release also includes exclusive bonus materials on the Blu-ray, such as additional performances, a blooper reel, and excerpts from the Claymation film “The Amazing Mr. Bickford.” These elements provide a comprehensive look into the creative processes behind the production, underscoring Zappa’s dedication to controlling every aspect of his art.
