Apple has launched Metallica's Mexico City concert in a groundbreaking virtual reality format exclusively for the Apple Vision Pro. Released on March 14, the immersive experience replicates the electrifying atmosphere of a live Metallica performance, bringing fans closer to the action than ever before.
The concert features three iconic tracks—"Whiplash," "One," and "Enter Sandman"—captured using Apple Immersive Video technology. This format delivers a 180-degree, 3D experience with up to 8K resolution and spatial audio, allowing viewers to look around freely and feel as if they are part of the 65,000-strong audience. Recorded with 14 high-definition cameras, the footage provides both wide venue views and intimate interactions with the band members.
Lars Ulrich described the release as a "game changer," highlighting the fusion of Metallica's powerful performance with cutting-edge VR technology. The meticulous stage setup and camera placement enable fans to experience the concert from various perspectives, including close-ups of band members and panoramic shots of the crowd.
This release is part of Apple's broader initiative to integrate music into immersive formats. Previous offerings include The Weekend's "Open Hearts" and Raye's "Concert for One," with an upcoming concert by Bono titled "Stories of Surrender" scheduled for May 30. Alongside the Metallica concert, an exclusive interview with Zayn Lo and Lars Ulrich will be available for free on Apple's SXSW YouTube channel.
Apple Vision Pro, currently available in multiple regions including Australia, Canada, China, and the USA, continues to set the standard for virtual reality experiences. Metallica's VR concert exemplifies the potential of immersive technology to enhance live music engagement, offering fans a unique way to enjoy their favorite bands from the comfort of their homes.
