Paul McCartney is set to delve into his Wings legacy with the forthcoming release of WINGS: The Story of a Band on the Run, scheduled for November 4, 2025. Edited by historian Ted Widmer, the comprehensive 528-page volume draws from dozens of hours of interviews with McCartney and numerous key figures associated with the band. This new edition marks a significant departure from the previous WINGSPAN: Paul McCartney’s Band on the Run, which was edited by Beatles expert Mark Lewisohn.

Organized around nine Wings albums, the book offers an in-depth exploration that includes 1971’s Ram and the live album Wings Over America, expanding beyond the seven studio albums traditionally associated with Wings. This structure allows for a detailed examination of the band’s evolution and the diverse musical landscapes they navigated during their decade-long run from 1971 to 1981.

In addition to the extensive textual content, WINGS: The Story of a Band on the Run features over 100 black-and-white and color photographs, many of which have never been published before. These visual elements provide a rich, archival perspective on the band’s journey, complementing the written narrative. The book is part of a larger initiative to reexamine and appreciate Wings’ catalogue, which includes recent reissues from McCartney’s Archive Collection and a forthcoming documentary by filmmaker Morgan Neville that focuses on McCartney’s solo and Wings-related work from the 1970s.

Fans will appreciate the meticulous attention to detail in documenting Wings’ history, from lineup changes to significant performances and recordings. The inclusion of One Hand Clapping and other less mainstream projects highlights the band’s artistic growth and the challenges they faced. This new publication not only celebrates Wings’ musical achievements but also provides valuable insights into the dynamics that propelled them to perform for massive audiences and leave a lasting impact on the music industry.

With its blend of comprehensive research, rare photography, and engaging storytelling, WINGS: The Story of a Band on the Run promises to be an essential addition to any Paul McCartney or Wings enthusiast’s collection. The release coincides with other archival projects, reinforcing McCartney’s dedication to preserving and revisiting the legacy of one of his most influential post-Beatles ventures.
