Treehaus Audiolab is set to unveil the LCR Phono, a high-end two-block tube phono preamplifier, at AXPONA 2025 in Chicago. Established in 2017 in Connecticut, the company continues to push the boundaries of vinyl reproduction with this latest offering, which combines meticulous craftsmanship with advanced audio engineering.
The LCR Phono addresses two critical functions for vinyl playback. Firstly, it applies the RIAA equalization curve using an all-passive network of inductors (L), capacitors (C), and resistors (R). This design ensures that only the inductors interact directly with the signal path, minimizing component interference and maintaining signal purity. The inductors feature Finemet cores, each hand-coated with Urushi lacquer, enhancing both performance and durability. High-quality capacitors and resistors are carefully selected to complement the overall circuit integrity.
In terms of amplification, the LCR Phono employs 7308 twin-triode vacuum tubes in the initial stage for their exceptionally low noise and resistance to microphonics. A subsequent stage with 12AT7 tubes provides additional gain, bringing the total amplification to 46 dB. This makes the preamplifier versatile for both moving magnet (MM) cartridges and moving coil (MC) cartridges when used with a step-up transformer like the Treehaus Audiolab MC SUT. The tube-rectified power supply, housed separately, utilizes a CLCLC configuration with a Finemet choke, ensuring a clean and stable power source. Features such as variable cartridge loading on two inputs and a mute/stereo/mono switch enhance usability and adaptability to different audio setups.
Aesthetically, the LCR Phono is available in two distinct designs. The Kinsuido variant draws inspiration from 1970’s Japanese Hi-Fi and MCM styles, while the A/Machines version pays homage to early Western Electric and Klangfilm equipment. Custom finishes are also available upon request, allowing audiophiles to tailor the unit to their personal taste. Priced at $24,000, including vacuum tubes, the LCR Phono represents a significant investment for those seeking uncompromising audio fidelity and artisanal build quality.
