Onkyo was founded by Takeshi Goda in 1946 while working in sound at Matsushita Electric, renamed Osaka Onkyo in 1947, and became Onkyo Corporation in 1971. The name 'Onkyo' means 'sound harmony' in Japanese. Key milestones include introducing the Integra amplifier series (1969), becoming the first THX-certified consumer receiver manufacturer (1993), and acquiring Pioneer's Home Electronics division (2015). The company filed for bankruptcy in May 2022 but was acquired by Voxx's Premium Audio Company (PAC) in joint venture with Sharp for $30.8 million. Now operating under new ownership with headquarters remaining in Osaka, Japan, Onkyo maintains 59 employees with over 1,300 years of collective industry experience and continues developing audio products with renewed focus on Japanese engineering excellence.
