Mandatory viewing required for all nominated films to ensure fair and comprehensive evaluation.
Verification system introduced for screenings, promoting unbiased voting practices.
Clarification on AI's role in filmmaking, with human judgment remaining central in assessments.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced significant rule changes for the 2026 Oscars, aiming to enhance fairness and inclusivity in the voting process. Starting next year, all Academy members will be required to view every film within their nominated categories before casting their votes. This mandate applies to documentaries, short films, international films, and other categories, ensuring that each nominee receives a comprehensive evaluation.
To enforce this new requirement, the Academy has introduced a verification system. Members must either participate in screenings through the virtual Screening Room or provide proof of attending a cinema showing of the respective films. This measure is designed to prevent biased voting based on familiarity or preference, promoting a more equitable chance for all films regardless of their popularity or length.
In addition to the viewing mandate, the Academy addressed the role of artificial intelligence in filmmaking. The organization clarified that AI tools will neither positively nor negatively influence the judging process. However, the extent to which members consider AI contributions in their assessments remains at their discretion, maintaining the integrity of human judgment in the selection of winners.
The Academy is also expanding the scope of recognition with the introduction of new categories. In 2025, the Oscars will honor the Best Casting team for the first time, followed by the Best Stunt Design category in 2026. These additions reflect the evolving landscape of film production and the importance of diverse roles in creating outstanding cinema.
The upcoming Oscar ceremony is scheduled for the night of March 15-16, 2026, with Conan O’Brien returning as the host. These rule changes and new categories signify the Academy's commitment to fostering a more inclusive and thorough evaluation process, ensuring that every deserving film has the opportunity to be recognized on cinema's most prestigious stage.
