Ateme and Focal Point VR introduced the first live 8K 3D streaming workflow for Apple’s Vision Pro headset.
Utilizes Focal Point VR's quad 3D 8K camera system and Ateme's TITAN encoder for real-time stereoscopic streaming.
Breakthrough eliminates extensive post-processing, achieving 37 pixels per degree for Apple’s Vision Pro display.
Video compression leader Ateme has partnered with immersive telepresence experts Focal Point VR to introduce the first live 8K 3D streaming workflow tailored for Apple’s Vision Pro headset. Utilizing Focal Point VR’s cutting-edge quad 3D 8K panoramic camera system in conjunction with Ateme’s TITAN encoder, the collaboration enables real-time streaming of high-resolution stereoscopic video through Apple’s MV-HEVC codec.
This groundbreaking setup marks a significant advancement in live broadcasting, allowing events such as sports and concerts to be experienced with unprecedented detail and depth. Unlike previous offerings that relied on pre-recorded content, this new workflow delivers live, immersive experiences that closely replicate being physically present at the venue. The adoption of MV-HEVC, an extension of the HEVC standard, ensures compatibility with 4K, 8K, HDR10, and Dolby Vision, although it remains unsupported by other headsets like Meta Quest.
Technical experts highlight that achieving the level of pixel density required for the Apple Vision Pro’s display—37 pixels per degree—was previously attainable only through extensive post-processing of prerecorded material. The ability to stream directly in 8K 3D without such processing represents a pivotal moment for the industry, pushing the boundaries of what virtual reality content can achieve in real-time scenarios.
While mainstream adoption of 8K televisions has been slow, the necessity for high resolution in virtual reality underscores the relevance of this technology. The enhanced clarity and realism provided by live 8K 3D streaming are expected to drive significant interest and development within the immersive media sector. As this technology evolves, it could redefine the standards for live event broadcasts, offering audiences a more engaging and lifelike viewing experience.
Industry leaders Ateme and Focal Point VR remain optimistic about the future of live 8K 3D streaming. With the groundwork now laid, the potential applications span a wide range of immersive broadcasts, setting the stage for further innovations in how audiences interact with live content through advanced virtual reality platforms.
