Paul McCartney announces a 50th anniversary half-speed mastered vinyl edition of Wings’ *Venus and Mars*.
Features meticulous reproduction of original artwork, stickers, posters, and OBI-strip for collectors.
Newly mixed Dolby Atmos version by Giles Martin and Steve Orchard available for the first time.
So, big news for all the vinyl enthusiasts and Wings fans out there! Paul McCartney has just announced a 50th anniversary vinyl edition of the 1975 Wings album Venus and Mars. This album holds a special place in many of our collections, and it's exciting to see it getting the half-speed mastering treatment.
For those who might not know, Venus and Mars was Wings' fourth studio album and the follow-up to the iconic Band on the Run. Recorded mostly in New Orleans, the album reached number one on both the US and UK album charts and sold over four million copies worldwide. It features fan favorites like "Letting Go" and the hit single "Listen To What The Man Said," which topped the US singles chart back in the day.
What makes this reissue particularly interesting is the half-speed mastering by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios. For audiophiles, this means potentially better sound quality with more detail and clarity. Half-speed mastering allows for more precise cutting of the vinyl lacquer, resulting in improved fidelity.
The vinyl is a meticulous reproduction of the original UK pressing, complete with the OBI-strip and the original artwork by Hipgnosis in a gatefold sleeve. They're even including recreations of the original stickers and posters, which is a nice touch for collectors who appreciate those vintage extras.
On the digital side, the album will be available in Dolby Atmos for the first time, newly mixed by Giles Martin and Steve Orchard. This could offer an immersive listening experience, adding depth and spatial elements to the classic tracks we've come to love.
The lineup during the recording of Venus and Mars saw some changes, with guitarist Jimmy McCulloch joining and drummer Geoff Britton being replaced by Joe English midway through the sessions. These shifts added new dynamics to the band's sound, captured in tracks like "Medicine Jar" and "Call Me Back Again."
It's worth noting that this release is currently available through Universal/McCartney channels but will be listed in regular retail outlets starting this Friday. The official release date is set for 21 March 2025.
For those of us who appreciate the technical aspects of vinyl and value high-quality reissues of classic albums, this is definitely something to look forward to. Whether you're a long-time fan or new to Wings, this 50th anniversary edition seems poised to offer a fresh listening experience of a timeless record.
