Thorens is a legendary Swiss turntable manufacturer founded in 1883 by Hermann Thorens in Sainte-Croix, Vaud, Switzerland. Originally producing musical boxes and clock movements, the company began making Edison-type phonographs in 1903, electric motor-drive players in 1928, and achieved world fame with the TD 124 model in 1957. After selling 1,300,000 turntables in the 20th century (an absolute market record), the company faced insolvency in 1999 but was revived by Swiss entrepreneur Heinz Rohrer in 2001. Following another transition, Thorens GmbH was established on May 1, 2018, in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany, under CEO Gunter Kürten (formerly of Denon and Elac). Since 2018, Thorens has experienced a renaissance, with turntables manufactured in Germany and Czech Republic using specialized manufacturing partners. The company continues its 140+ year legacy of shaping music reproduction with ground-breaking innovations from cylinder phonographs to modern turntables that delight music lovers worldwide.
