20 years after its original release, Deep Purple’s 2005 album Rapture of the Deep is making a grand return with a fully remixed and expanded edition, set to drop on August 29, 2025. Known for its blend of progressive rock sensibilities and the raw energy that defines the band's sound, this reissue breathes new life into a record considered by many to be an underrated gem in their vast discography.
The album, which marked the band's second outing with keyboardist Don Airey and fourth with guitarist Steve Morse, encountered a lukewarm reception upon its initial release. It was a time of transition for the legendary group, as they had recently switched labels from EMI to German-based Edel. Despite breaking into the Top 20 charts in countries like Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, struggled to make a dent in their home territory of the UK or in the United States. The updated edition seeks to rekindle interest in this overlooked entry by offering fans a refreshed sonic experience and a deeper dive into the recording process.
The remixing duties were helmed by bassist Roger Glover, with the remastering completed in analogue at Hamburg’s Chameleon Studios. The album now boasts a sharper, more polished sound, while retaining the organic warmth that audiophiles appreciate. The reissue revisits the original tracklist and expands it with rare additions like “Things I Never Said,” a bonus track previously limited to the Japanese release, and “MTV,” which had appeared only on select regional editions.
Furthermore, the anniversary edition features an exclusive bonus disc, available in both CD and LP formats, containing unreleased material from the album's 2005 recording sessions. Highlights include alternate studio jams and instrumental takes, alongside “Closing Note,” a never-before-heard instrumental piece by guitarist Steve Morse. These rare recordings provide a fascinating glimpse into the creative process behind the album, offering fans an intimate experience with the band’s workflow during a pivotal time in their career.
Rounding out the package is updated cover art, which offers a fresh visual take that complements the enhanced audio experience. The reissue will be available in several formats to satisfy collectors and vinyl enthusiasts alike, including a 3LP 180-gram edition in classic black vinyl and a strictly limited transparent sky-blue variant.
With the resurgence of interest in Deep Purple’s deep catalog, this anniversary release stands as a testament to the enduring power of Rapture of the Deep. It invites both longtime fans and those new to the band's extensive legacy to revisit an album where evocative lyrics, compelling musicianship, and unyielding energy create an enduring snapshot of the band’s journey through the 21st century.
