Founded in 1990 by Richard Edmund Lord in Bridgend, Wales, REL Acoustics Ltd. emerged from Lord's dissatisfaction with commercially available subwoofers of the day, setting out to build something better. The company name 'REL' derives from founder Richard Edmund Lord's initials. Almost immediately, word spread of a Welshman who had built incredible sounding sub-bass systems, with audiophiles searching out these legendary subs built like no other. In 1995, the company moved to Bridgend in South Wales, expanding their product line across different price ranges. Lord introduced key innovations including active subwoofers with independent, tunable crossovers and high input impedance circuits for direct connection to amplifier output terminals. In 2005, Donald Brody and John Hunter acquired REL Acoustics, marking the modern era of the company. Hunter, who previously owned Sumiko distributor and has 23 years of experience with European speaker designers, has focused on creating faster, more dynamic products. Today, REL operates from the UK with REL Acoustics America established in Berkeley, California in 2005, maintaining their mission of 'Do One Thing. Do It Perfectly' and continuing as one of the fastest-growing high-end audio brands.
