The TEAC TS-85 is a magnetic levitation turntable that was introduced around 1972. It features a unique magne-float mechanism that allows the turntable to float above its base using repulsive force from circular magnets, eliminating the need for a mechanical thrust bearing. This design minimizes noise and enhances playback quality. The turntable is equipped with a belt drive system and utilizes a 4-pole hysteresis synchronous motor to achieve consistent speeds of 33 1/3 and 45 RPM. The platter is made from aluminum die-cast and weighs 2.4 kg, with a high flywheel effect supported by the magnetic levitation system. The tonearm features a gyrostat mechanism and uses ultra-precision miniature bearings, along with a direct reading scale for needle pressure and a lateral balancer for enhanced setup ease. Additionally, the TS-85 is compatible with both MC and MM cartridges, equipped with a booster transformer to increase output voltage to 4 mV for MC cartridges. The cabinet is finished in walnut, providing both aesthetic appeal and structural integrity, while an insulated base helps to prevent vibration and howling. Overall, the TEAC TS-85 represents a combination of innovative audio engineering and elegant design.
