The JBL L50 is a vintage 3-way bookshelf speaker system launched in 1978. It features a unique grill design and incorporates a 25 cm cone woofer known as the 127A for low-frequency reproduction. The cone paper is ribbed to minimize distortion. For mid-range frequencies, a 10 cm dome driver is utilized, enhancing the speaker's directional characteristics. The design includes a robust magnetic circuit with a 5 cm voice coil that improves efficiency and transient response. Additionally, it uses an Alnico V magnet for better magnetic flux density. The mid-range driver, the LE5-10, is functionally sealed with sound-absorbing material to reduce distortion, while the high-frequency driver, a 3.6 cm cone tweeter named LE26, is designed to deliver improved transient characteristics. The crossover network employs advanced technology to ensure flat impedance and phase correction, using high-quality components to decrease distortion. The enclosure is made from 19 mm thick high-density particle board, filled with sound-absorbing material to dampen standing waves. Users can adjust the mid and high frequencies via a variable level control on the baffle. The speaker is finished in walnut and features a striking wavy diagonal grill design available in three color options: blue, red, and brown.
