The McIntosh D100 is a 2-channel digital preamplifier and digital-to-analog converter (DAC) that offers a blend of aesthetic appeal and audio performance. It is designed with five digital inputs, including two coaxial, two optical, and one USB. The device is equipped with double outputs: both balanced and unbalanced, featuring one fixed and one variable output. The variable output can be connected to a power amplifier and has volume control accessible via the remote. On the front panel, users can find a headphone output, a digital input selection knob, a mute button, a display for input and sampling frequency, a setup button, an output volume knob, and a power button. The back panel houses the IEC power port as well as the digital inputs and outputs. The D100 handles audio up to 192 kHz at 24-bit, which has raised some questions regarding higher sampling rates, although many current audio formats do not exceed these limits. The D100’s aesthetic mirrors classic McIntosh designs, featuring a black glass front panel, illuminated controls, and signature blue VU meters. It aims to integrate seamlessly into a McIntosh audio system, making it an attractive option for both newcomers and seasoned users alike.
